Is Sprouted Bread Actually Healthier For You? Here's What a Dietitian Has to Say

First of all, let’s talk about what sprouted bread actually is: it’s made when wheat kernels have been soaked and sprouted, then ground and baked into a loaf of bread. This is different from regular whole-wheat bread, where the wheat kernels are ground just the way they are.

Sprouted bread is said to be more nutritious, and Julieanna Hever, certified plant-based dietitian, confirmed this is true. “Some of the nutrients are retained and better absorbed when sprouted as opposed to a further processed bread,” Hever told POPSUGAR. “Nutrients may be more readily absorbed in the body when they are sprouted prior to consumption.”

When you sprout grains, you eliminate phytic acid, an enzyme inhibitor that isn’t easily processed by the body. That’s why sprouted bread is said to be easier on the digestive system.

Additionally, sprouted bread contains more protein, as well as less fat and carbohydrates than the other stuff you find in the bread aisle.
